We're not just going high, we're going all out
We started this issue of Luxeicon in what seemed like a different world, before the election shake up that literally shook us all up
- Aug.2024
The world is all eyes on Paris this month as the City of Lights hosts the Summer Olympics and, sure, there are sporting events going on, but, have you seen Snoop Dogg living his best life as NBC’s breakout commentator; Celine Dion bringing everyone to tears as she belted out Édith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’amour” atop the Eiffel Tower; the swagger of the South Sudanese basketball team; Simone Biles inspiring us with her instantly iconic comeback performances?
The Olympics is never really just about the games. It’s about the grit, the inspiration, the stories behind the sports, and since it’s in Paris, the fashion.
Here, the ten moments the editors at Luxeicon are currently obsessing over.
Snoop Dogg Making Midlife Look Great
We’re a country that believes in second acts. And Snoop Dogg, who’s been making cool look easy for literally decades, has seemingly become America’s sweetheart during these Olympic Games. In a brilliant marketing move, NBC hired him to commentate the Olympic Games (we dare you to not watch the play-by-play of this America vs. China badminton match over and over again). Between his signature commentary, to hanging with Simone Biles’ family during the Opening Ceremonies, Snoop Dogg is our favorite non-Olympian at the Olympics.
Moms are Athletes, Too
A seven-time Olympic gold medalist, track star Allyson Felix shows that women can have it juggle it all. She was instrumental in creating the first ever childcare nursery at the Olympics, proving that star power—used for the power of good, plus corporate dollars from Pampers—can make for a safe and nurturing space for athletes to care for their children while competing. P.S. Felix has two children, including one whom she gave birth to in April 2023. Leaving it all on the track post-partum? Absolutely badass.
Swag from South Sudan
The Olympics have always brought out the best of humankind, and this year, it’s on display by the athletes from South Sudan. In the midst of a civil war, the newest country on the planet showed up with a basketball team bringing enough swagger, charm and grit to win its first game.
From X Games to Olympics
For decades, there were certain sports considered too extreme for the staid Olympics. Not this year. Spectators are being treated to a whole host of first-time Olympic events from breaking to skateboarding to surfing. The surfing competition is in Tahiti, a French Polynesian island almost 10,000 miles away from Paris. It has some of the most dangerous waves in the world and has already produced some hold-your-breath moments. But this photo showing Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina seemingly floating in air has shown us that athletes may really be superhuman. Plus, Coco Yoshizawa (at only 14 years old)–taking gold in Women’s Street Skateboarding with a move she learned in elementary school–reminding us never to underestimate our kids’ passions.
Clark Kent Moment
Clark Kent look-alike Stephen Nedoroscik arrives with glasses on, posting on TikTok about how fast he can solve a Rubix Cube, and then utterly man-handles the pommel horse, winning a bronze for Team USA. He’s the thirst trap we never knew we needed.
Flava to the rescue
After athlete Maggie Steffens posted on Instagram about the financial challenges for her and her water polo teammates, rapper Flavor Flav signed up to personally sponsor the gold-medal winning team. He now sits poolside, donning a water polo cap, naturally.
The Gold Star of Gold Medal Trunks
It’s the fashion capital of the world, so of course LVMH went all in at the Olympics this year. Louis Vuitton, Dior and Berluti all designed athlete uniforms; while Chaumet designed the Olympic medals. But have you seen the trunks they come in? Louis Vuitton’s iconic logo adorns the cases the medals are presented in at these games. Is it bad if we want the trunk just as much as the medal?
Simone Biles, Inventor
As if it wasn’t enough to dominate your sport, earning the GOAT title in women’s gymnastics, (Watch this highlights clip and try not to dance in your seat), Biles has also been so successful in her sport that she’s invented new gymnastics moves. Here, The Washington Post breaks down five moves that have actually been named after Biles in some exceptionally stunning graphics of the world-famous gymnast.
Beyonce and Taylor Swift, Hype Women
We love a good hype montage and NBC delivered two for the countdown to the Olympics. Beyonce showed up on social media to welcome the Olympics in a sequined leotard that felt like a throwback to the Mary Lou Retton days of gymnastics. The #Beylympics montage splices together her iconic American look with the 2024 Olympians getting ready for the competition of their lives. While Taylor Swift’s #AreYouReadyForIt song proved it’s truly the track of the summer, with another montage highlighting the Opening Ceremonies and the athletes talking about their Olympic dreams. Even if you’re just trying to hype yourself up for a jog, play these on a loop.
Humor, a Cut Jawline and a Now, A Medal
The US has never medaled in rugby, and this year, the U.S. women’s team took home the bronze, helped by the star—and social media star—Ilona Maher. Her ‘grams are hilarious, empowering and defying stereotypes. She posts herself in bikinis, highlights her cellulite and cut jaw bone, captures her team applying makeup, and proves that being strong and athletic is not at odds with her adorable femme side.
